Teaching students to read sensitively and insightfully is probably the most
important job of a language teacher. It emphasized perspective interpretations, sensitivity to
language, and an appreciation of style. 86% of teachers’ state that taking part in a reading festival or competition had a positive impact on their whole school’s reading culture. Attentive reading and sensitivity to language are among the most important skills students acquire in school.


OUR AIM:
To get as many learners reading as possible.
To increase learners pronunciation, vocabulary and overall knowledge.
Reading out loud will also increase a learner’s self-confidence.


WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Learners from grade 1 – 12 are welcome to
participate in our reading competition.
Moderation is done per grade group.

ENGLISH - FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE - PREPARED READING
AFRIKAANS - HOME LANGUAGE - PREPARED READING
AFRIKAANS - FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE—PREPARED READING
isiZULU - HOME LANGUAGE - PREPARED READING


TIME LIMITS
Grade 1 to 5 is 2 minutes
Grade 6 to 12 is 3 minutes

Prepared reading / Voorbereide Lees:
Each learner choose their own age appropriate text to read.


IN WHICH LANGUAGES CAN YOU COMPETE?

ENGLISH HOME LANGUAGE:
Learners who have English as their Home Language at school.

ENGLISH FIRST ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE:
Learners who have English as their First Additional
Language at school.

AFRIKAANS HUISTAAL:
Learners who have Afrikaans as their Home Language at school.

AFRIKAANS ADDISIONELE TAAL:
Learners who have Afrikaans as their Second Language at school.

isiZULU:
Any learner who can read isiZulu may participate


First Round (Video submission Round):
Each participants to receive a certificate & rebuttal, which will be emailed to them for the 1st round. This round is a video submission round for 2024.

Upon the second round: 
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th place will receive an
additional certificate. These learners will also be the overall winners of the province.
(This will be a face-to-face round).

National Final Round:
The top 4 of each province will invited to the National Final, where the top 4 of each
province will compete against one another, to determine the overall winners for SA in each age/grade group per division. 1st place receives a trophy, pin and book prize. 2nd to 4th place receives a pin and certificate


COMPETITION RULES:
  • All learners from one school should not choose the same piece to prepare. ONE text per learner.
  • Keep to the time limits given.
  • No set reading topics/texts will be provided. Choose your own. (Prepared reading)
  • Wear your school uniform on competition day. Should by neatly dressed. For video as well.
  • Have only your reading material present. No other supporting material.
  • Each reader needs to first introduce himself/herself, the title of the text and the author of the text.
  • Reader will not have to do unprepared in the prepared reading division (only at National Final).
  • All participants / teachers to ensure that the spelling for the participant’s name and surname is correct on the entry form. The participation certificates are pre-printed and no reprints will be made!
  • A name list with the following details to accompany your entry: learner name, surname and grade and the division the learner will participate in.
  • There will be one adjudicator, moderating each grade group on the competition day.
  • At the National Reading Final, there will be two or more adjudicators, adjudicating the final.
  • The adjudicator’s decision is final.
  • For the video submission round (1st Round) you have 2 options on how to submit your video:
  • Option 1 : Upload video on our Google Drive 
  • Option 2 : Create a video on YouTube and send your video link to SALA
No WhatsApp or WeTransfer video’s will be accepted.

Forward the entry form and proof of payment before the closing date to read.poem@salacompetition.com
Make sure you receive a confirmation email from us to state that we have received your entry and payment.

HOW THE PREPARED READING COMPETITION WORKS:

1ST ROUND: (Video submission round for all divisions)
  • The 1st round will be a video submission round.
  • Learner to prepare 1 (ONE) text of their choice.
  • Learner to be recorded by parent/teacher and submit the video (keeping to set time limits) to SALA before the cut-off date. Need to see the learner from the waist up.
  • Learner to be dressed in their school uniform when recorded.
  • Save your video with your name, grade, division and school name.
  • Video to be uploaded on SALA’s Google Drive / YouTube link can be emailed to SALA .Certificate and rebuttal will be emailed to you.
  • At the end of the 1st round, the top leaners of each grade, of each province will compete against each other at a provincial face-to-face round.
2ND ROUND - PROVINCIAL ROUND: (isiZulu will be another video submission round)
  • The 2nd round will be the top 10 learners of each grade, of your province, which will compete against each other at a face-to-face round.
  • On this competition day, learners have to wear their school uniform.
  • Learners have to prepare 1 text for this round.
  • You read for the set time limit given.
  • The top 4 learners of each grade, of each province, will be going through to the National Final Round, where all the provincial winners will compete to be the National winner.
  • Each participant will receive a participation certificate.
NATIONAL FINAL ROUND:
  • The top 4 learners of each grade, of each province, will compete face-to-face on the competition day.
  • 1st place will receive a trophy, book prize and pin and will be the winner of their grade group for SA.
  • 2nd to 4th place will receive a pin and certificate. 


TAKE NOTE:  
Any learner participating in a provincial round or nation final round may pre-order a provincial or national participation pin from SALA. In order to order these pins, please complete the relevant Google form. Ensure to send us your proof of payment after you placed your order.

If for any reason whatsoever it happens that the National Final Round cannot be a face-to-face round during 2024 courier fees may apply for courier of winners prizes.
The South African Literacy Association will do everything it their power to have a formal face to face
National Final with formal prize giving at the National Final.
