Poetry is an adventure in renewal, a creative act, a perpetual beginning, a rebirth of wonder.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
Just speak clearly and slowly. Obviously, poems come in lines, but pausing at the end of every line will create a choppy effect and interrupt the flow of the poem's sense. We want to feel the words of the poem. YOU NEED TO KNOW THE POEM OFF BY HEART. REFRAIN FROM READING THE POEM TO US.
Select one of the poems supplied by SALA for your grade group to prepare.
YOU PARTICIPATE IN YOUR OWN GRADE GROUP.
Poetry Divisions for 2024:
You can enter into the following categories in English / Afrikaans:

HOW TO ENTER:
AWARDS:
1st Round: Video submission Round:
Each participant’s certificate &
rebuttal will be emailed to them
2nd Round: Face-to-Face Round:
The top learners of each Province will be selected to participate at the Provincial Round. The top 4 learners of the Provincial Round will compete at the National Final Round.
National Final Round:
1st place receives a trophy, PIN and certificate. 2nd to 4th place winners receives a PIN and certificate.
ENTRY FEE 2024:
R120.00 per learner (per division)

- Complete our entry form attached in this booklet.
- Send your proof of payment & entry form to: read.poem@salacompetition.com before the entry cut-off deadline.
- Email your YouTube link and/or Upload your video on our Google Drive account before the cut-off date.
- All work will be adjudicated and certificate and rebuttal will be emailed to you.

- Should use one of the poems provided by The South African Literacy Association.
- Should ensure that your video has been uploaded on Google Drive and/or your YouTube link be emailed to SALA before the submission cut-off date. Email to read.poem@salacompetition.com
- No WhatsApp or WeTransfer video’s will be accepted.
- The adjudicator’s decision is final.
- We reserve the right to extend this competition’s closing date to ensure prizes are awarded to work of the highest standard.
- Adhere to the relevant language depending on which language you entered for.
